Do you know a Local Sporting Champion?
18 June 2009
Jenny Macklin MP, Federal Member for Jagajaga, today called on young local sporting champions who are hoping to compete in a National or State competition to apply for a Local Sporting Champion grant to help them realise their dreams.
Grants are available for young people aged 12 to 18 years to help them meet the costs of competing in State or National sporting competitions.
“We have some wonderful young sporting heroes in our local area, and these grants will help them test their skills in National and State Competitions” Ms Macklin said.
“Any team or individual taking part in a state or national competition which requires more than 250km travel can apply”
Successful recipients can receive grants of $500 per individual and $3,000 per team, which can be put towards the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms and equipment for the selected sporting competition.
Rebecca Gould of St Helena, recipient of the most recent round of Local Sporting Champion Grants, said the funding would help her represent her school at the 2009 Hydro Tasmania Rowing Championships in Tasmania.
“Rowing is a very expensive sport to take part in. This funding will allow me to compete in this important race in Tasmania, and will hopefully help me reach my goal of rowing in the Olympics one day,” Ms Gould said.
Applications for the 2008/09 grant cycle close 30 June 2009, so eligible participants must apply as soon as possible.
